First, I will start with a brief explanation of EMDR Therapy. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Basically, a stressful or traumatic memory gets stuck in the part of the brain that regulates flight, fight, freeze or fawn (people pleasing), and triggering negative feelings and behaviors. It is a gentler way to address past, painful stressors. With EMDR, the client with the support of the therapist is able to activate the brain and the memory is desensitized and the brain that rationalizes that event is over and reprocesses the event and associates it with a positive or neutral thought such as “I did the best I could” and the client moves away from the fight, flight, freeze and fawn response to the previously stressful trigger. Below is a graphic that explains the theory of EMDR.
