Sleep

Sleep is an important part of life, and so many people tell me they do not get enough or the quality is not good. The question asked by so many of my patients is “What can we do to improve sleep?” As a neurofeedback therapist, I think it is important to understand the importance of sleep and the current understanding of the things that get in the way.

What is happening during the day?
During the day, we experience exposure to various toxins including artificial sweeteners, pesticides, heavy metals, daily stress, and various traumas including emotional, environmental, and physical traumas. These encounters trigger a buildup of waste in the brain at the cellular level and can result in damage to the brain and the nervous system. Basically, concentrations of beta-amyloid surge during waking hours and these amyloids need to be cleared. While the brain does have a mechanism to process away these toxins, it is best to avoid the toxins to best support the brain’s ability to be healthy.

What is happening during sleep?
Our body’s most effective tool in dealing with the toxins encountered is sleep. During sleep our brain acts like a dishwasher and cleans away the gunk just like the dishwasher cleans the foot and other debris from the dishes in the dishwasher. Basically, the fluids in the spinal cord are released into the brain and a cleansing occurs. However, if there are significant toxins and build ups of amyloids then the brain cannot keep up and processing is not optimal.

What can we do to support the clearance process in the brain?
First, getting the appropriate amount of sleep helps a lot. In addition, exercise, a healthy diet and engaging in brain games support better brain health and are believed to create an environment for metabolic clearance. In addition, at Authentic Brain Solutions we provide evidence based and effective solutions. For example, rather than traditional brain mapping we provide an overview of the current functional status of your brain using the Brain Gauge. The Brain Gauge maps the brain measuring the brains current state related to Focus, Speed, Accuracy, Sequencing, Fatigue, Timing Perception, Plasticity, and Connectivity producing an overall brain health score. With this score and other assessments, we establish a custom treatment plan to achieve your brain and mental health goals using IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).
In addition to improved sleep from our custom treatment plans, patients report improvements with ADHD/ADD, Academic Performance, Anxiety, Depression, Athletic Performance, Aspects of Autism, Behavioral Problems, Cancer, Chronic Fatigue, Concussion, Dementia/Memory, Eating Disorders, Fibromyalgia, Learning Disorder, Lyme Disease, Migraines, OCD, Parkinson, PTSD, Strokes, Traumatic Brain Injury and More.
